About the Workshop
Dating back at least to Roman times, grafting is a technique for creating copies of a desirable plant. Cuttings from one plant are bound tightly to a corresponding cut in another plant of the same species, allowing two genetically distinct parts to grow together and function as a single organism.

This workshop will demonstrate grafting techniques that will allow you to:

  • Preserve trees that are rare or of sentimental value

  • Gain access to varieties not commonly available in stores

  • Collect many varieties on a single tree

  • Convert ornamental to fruit-bearing varieties

  • Create fruit trees for a fraction of what you would pay at a nursery

This workshop will focus on grafting apple trees, but the techniques used can be applied to most other species of fruit and nut trees as well.

Your registration includes all necessary materials for the workshop.

What to Expect & What to Bring

This workshop will involve one and a half to two hours of outdoor instruction, standing, and hands-on practice. There may be some walking to and from instruction sites. Make sure to dress in weather-appropriate layers and wear sturdy footwear. Trails and instruction sites may be muddy.

About the Workshop Leader

Michael Leidy has been grafting trees for about 10 years. He first got into grafting because he wanted to ensure apple trees loved by his late grandfather would be preserved. He enjoys making hard cider, so he's collected a few apple tree varieties for that as well. He has a bachelor's degree in Forestry from SUNY ESF.
