About this outing
Learn to read the tracks and sign of the animal residents of the Rensselaer Plateau. This ancient art/science will give you a fun way to connect with and get to know the local ecology, wherever you may be. From the signs animals leave, we can learn what they like, where their favorite places are, who they avoid or gravitate to, and how they interact with all the species of plants, trees, mammals, and birds around them. Sometimes, we can even figure out what they are thinking or feeling!

What to expect & what to bring

This outing will involve 3 hours of off-trail hiking, exploration, and tracking over varied terrain. There will be some periods of stopping to gather around tracks. Bring water, snacks, and a lunch. Make sure to dress in warm layers and wear sturdy, warm, weather-appropriate footwear.

Tracking involves a lot of stillness while discussing the tracks and can be a bit boring for young children. They are welcome, but be prepared to have their interest stray away from the tracks.

About the outing leader

Dan Yacobellis has been leading tracking outings on the Plateau for over a decade and has led many for the RPA community.
