Fun with Charcoal

Wednesday May 18, 2022

10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Pineridge Cross Country Ski Area

1463 Plank Rd, Petersburg, NY 12138

Come join a special outing which combines Plateau history, spring hiking and Plein Air sketching. RPA board member Walter Kersch will lead a gentle hike through the woods at the Pineridge Cross Country Ski Area, hunting for the remains of the Plateau's "forgotten" charcoal pits. You will then have an opportunity to harvest your own charcoal for a sketch of whatever piques your interest in your surroundings. Please bring your own sketch paper and a hard backed surface to draw on. Suggested donation is $10. Please wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring water and a snack. Rain gear is recommended in case of inclement weather. In the event of severe weather, this outing will be rescheduled for May 20th. All ages welcome.

This outing showcases the unique history of the Rensselaer Plateau (see below) and offers an opportunity to think about its future. As a Forests Forever outing, participants will...

  • hear an update on the progress of the Forests Forever Campaign,

  • have a chance to ask questions about our shared vision for the future of the Plateau and

  • learn more about how we can all work together to create a corridor of conservation on the Rensselaer Plateau

From the RPA website:

"Troy was one of the industrial capitals of the world in the 1800’s and charcoal from the plateau fueled its iron foundries. Wood was cut and stacked in a circle to form a kiln which was covered with dirt, limiting air so the wood would burn slowly. The burn was tended day and night for days until the charcoal was formed. It was then sent by wagon to Sand Lake and into Troy...In the woods throughout the Plateau, you can still discern the remains of charcoal pits, large open circles 20-30’ in diameter with raised edges where charcoal can still be found within inches of the surface."
