About this event

Protecting forests from natural threats such as invasive species is an important part of sustainable forest management. Hemlock woolly adelgid is an invasive forest insect that poses a serious threat to the native forest and ornamental hemlocks trees. This is the second event in a two-part community science volunteer opportunity.

You are invited to join Addison Kubik of Capital Region PRISM for a morning at Albert Family Community Forest to identify and monitor Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) using the iMapInvasives mobile app (iMapApp). You will learn HWA survey protocols, how to recognize infestations and collected data to be submitted on iMapApp.

What to expect & what to bring

This outing will involve 2 hours of slow moving as we monitor along the trails. Participants are encouraged to wear thick layers and heavy gloves. We will be accessing Hemlock branches from various locations. Bring water and snacks. Make sure to dress appropriately and wear sturdy footwear. It’s recommended that participants load iMapInvasives on their mobile devices before the outing.

About the outing leader

In college, Addison studied Conservation Biology with a focus in botany and dendrology. He now works as the Education & Outreach Coordinator for the Capital Region Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (PRISM) where he supports conservation work in the Capital Region by providing talks and lectures, hosting workshops and trainings, leading volunteer events, and more.
