In 2020, Lucia Skwarek and Alex Gutierrez donated this 65-acre property in East Nassau to Rensselaer Plateau Alliance. The parcel includes a beautiful forest and a stunning 28-acre wetland. (For the whole story behind Alex and Lucia's generous donation, go to page 4 of RPA's 2020 Newsletter.)
Soon after, our volunteer trail crew got to work, planning and clearing a trail network that would highlight some of the best parts of the forest and the wetlands.
We invite you to join us for an exploration of Gutierrez Family Forest, now just coming into spring transition. On this, the first official RPA outing to this newly-protected property, we will look for signs of all things spring.
We'll be checking this Third Week in April post from Northern Woodlands' This Week in the Woods series right before our hike, so we know what to look for.
Bring a mask, water, a snack for a mid-hike break, cameras, binoculars, and some good stories. Waterproof footwear is recommended, since we might do some exploring along the wetlands.
